Solo Female Travel in Thailand: What to Know Before You Go

Planning a trip? This guide to Solo Female Travel in Thailand covers safety tips, cultural etiquette, packing advice, and what to know before you go so you can explore with confidence.

Is Thailand Safe for Female Travelers?

In my opinion, Thailand is a great place for first-time travelers, solo females, and even families.

Even though it’s half a world away from the US (literally!) Thailand is a very peaceful place, and I never once felt unsafe there. I visited the northern mountains, the hustle of Bangkok, and the vibrant city life of Phuket.

I visited temples, ate at the most amazing restaurants, booked excursions, and walked around (a lot!) at night and early in the morning. The people are amazingly friendly and kind.

Obviously, always be aware of your surroundings and take caution, but overall, I think Thailand is the perfect place to visit if you are traveling alone.

Why Thailand is Great for Solo Female Travelers

To me, Thailand is one of the best places you can visit if you are a solo female traveler. The locals are very welcoming, and the culture is friendly. I rarely met a person that wasnt pleasnt. The smiles everywhere you go were abundant.

They also have a well-developed tourism infrastructure. No matter what town you visit, big or small, there are tourists everywhere from every different country.

I also found it very easy to meet other travelers. I took a cooking class in Chiang Mai and met several other solo travelers. Everywhere you go, solo travelers are around in Thailand, making it feel very safe and welcoming.

Explore More During the Day

Like any place I travel alone, I try to do most of my exploring during the early morning and be back at my hotel by nighttime.

The early mornings are always ideal because there are barely any crowds. Which not only means no lines to the popular attractions, but also great for photo taking. So you dont have to worry about other tourists in your pictures.

Even though Thailand is generally considered a safe place, I just feel better not being out too late after dark. Not to mention, I like getting a good night’s sleep so I can get back up in the morning to keep exploring!

Choose Group Tours

Strength in numbers! If I’m venturing far away from my accommodations, I find it easier to hire a guide or book a tour. Not only is everything planned out for me, but I never have to worry about ending up in a place Im unfamilair with.

I also love the ability to meet new people when I travel, and joining a group tour is a great way to do that!

For Chiang Mai, I highly recommend doing the Doi Inthanon National Park Day Tour. It’s a great way to see temples, waterfalls, mountains, an authentic karan village, and more.

In Bangkok, sign up for the Floating Market & Train Market with a train/Boat ride. These are both about 45 minutes outside of Bangkok, so transportation can be tricky. If you join a tour, it includes all of that.

And in Phuket, you absolutely cannot miss the Phi Phi Islands Speedboat Day Trip from Phuket with Lunch. No one can visit Thailand without seeing the Phi Phi Islands!

Dress Respectfully

One good rule of thumb when you visit anywhere, is to respect the culture by dressing appropriately. Thailand is a pretty relaxed place when it comes to dress code, but they are very strict about entering temples.

When visiting Temples in Thailand, you must cover both your shoulders and your knees. So long pants, long sleeve, short sleeve, or even a shulder wrap are great ideas. I brought this lighteight shoulder wrap that easily fit in my purse but could be thrown on when entering temples.

Thailand Travel Tips for Solo Female Travelers

Traveling to Thailand solo was one of the most rewarding experiences I’ve ever had. From the energy of the cities to the peaceful temples and beautiful beaches, it’s a place that constantly surprises you in the best ways.

As a solo female traveler, I quickly realized how welcoming and easy Thailand is to explore on your own. If you’re thinking about going, my biggest advice is simple: be open, stay aware, and embrace the adventure.

Some of my favorite moments happened when I stepped outside my comfort zone, and Thailand is the perfect place to do just that.

Happy Travels!
